Accepting Life Fully:
Meditation works by allowing you to accept everything about you. As of now, you cling to one idea of life: “I only want happiness. I don’t want sadness.” Try to live that concept fully for one day and see how it works. The more you try to just be happy, the more difficult it is to be happy. Happiness is an illusion, a mental state. It is not something tangible. Happiness is not something that you can hold on to, store in a box, and come back to every day.
Wisdom is to see that life is not made of happiness alone; it is also made of fear, frustration, and disturbance. If you are okay with life being the way it is, if you accept life fully the way it is, then it liberates something within you. The problem is that the rest of the world is selling something else altogether; they are selling some concept, some idea of the world, which doesn’t fit into the reality of what life is.
If someone discovers happiness in a certain way, they try to sell it. The self-help books are filled with such unattainable ideals of happiness. If you can accept all of your behaviors and actions with equanimity, you don’t need any self-help concepts. You are all the help you will ever need. The solution is not an idea. The solution is always you.
Meditation never says, “There is something wrong with your anger – Let me change it. There is something wrong with the way you walk – Let me change it.” Instead, meditation says, “I will illuminate your life for you. I will show you everything you are doing with deep clarity. Then you can decide what you want to do with that knowledge.” Meditation never says, “Don’t get angry.” It says, “Watch your anger.” Meditation never says, “Don’t get frustrated.” It says, “Get frustrated, but watch your frustration so that you can take part in it.”
