Question 1 of 5
1. Question
Consider the following statements about ‘Electoral Bonds’
- They serve as a mechanism for allowing citizens to contribute to political parties without disclosing their identity.
- They can only be purchased by individuals, and corporate entities are excluded from participating in this funding mechanism.
- Supreme Court strikes down electoral bonds scheme: ‘unconstitutional’ violative of Article 14 and Article 19(1)(a).
Select the correct statement(s)
Correct
Solution (b)
Statement Analysis:
Statement 1 Statement 2 Statement 3 Correct Incorrect Correct The bonds are similar to bank notes that are payable to the bearer on demand and are free of interest. These bonds are sold in multiples of Rs 1,000, Rs 10,000, Rs 1 lakh, Rs 10 lakh, and Rs 1 crore.
They can be purchased through a KYC-compliant account to make donations to a political party.
EBs have a life of only 15 days during which it can be used for making donations to political parties.
The name and other information of the donor are not entered on the instrument and thus electoral bonds are said to be anonymous.
Electoral bonds are interest-free bearer bonds or money instruments that can be purchased by companies and individuals in India from authorized branches of the State Bank of India (SBI). The bench, also comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna, B R Gavai, J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, struck down a set of amendments. “The Electoral Bond Scheme, the proviso to Section 29C(1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 (as amended by Section 137 of the Finance Act 2017); Section 182(3) of the Companies Act (as amended by Section 154 of the Finance Act 2017); and Section 13A(b) (of the Income Tax Act) (as amended by Section 11 of the Finance Act 2017) are violative of Article 19(1)(a) and unconstitutional,” the bench said.
It held that “the deletion of the proviso to Section 182(1) of the Companies Act, permitting unlimited corporate funding to political parties is arbitrary and violative of Article 14”.
Context: Supreme Court strikes down electoral bonds scheme: ‘unconstitutional’, ‘arbitrary.

Question 2 of 5
2. Question
With reference to ‘Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC)’, consider the following statements:
Statement 1: AMOC is a large-scale ocean circulation system that plays a crucial role in redistributing heat around the Earth.
Statement 2: A weakening or slowdown of the AMOC has been linked to potential changes in regional and global climate patterns.
Which one of the following is correct in respect to the above statements?
Correct
Solution (a)
Statement Analysis:
Statement 1: This statement is correct. The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a major component of the global ocean circulation system. It involves the movement of warm surface waters from the tropics to the North Atlantic, where they release heat to the atmosphere, and then the cold, dense water sinks and flows southward in the deep ocean.
Statement 2: This statement is also correct. A weakening or slowdown of the AMOC has been observed and is linked to potential changes in regional and global climate patterns. A weaker AMOC can affect the distribution of heat around the Earth, impacting weather patterns, sea level, and marine ecosystems.
Explanation for the Option (a):
Statement 1 is accurate in describing the role of AMOC in redistributing heat, and Statement 2 provides a correct explanation by connecting the potential consequences of a weakening AMOC to changes in climate patterns. Therefore, option (a) is the correct choice.
Context: Recent studies show that the AMOC could collapse between 2025 and 2095 due to the impact of anthropogenic emissions.
