The Scheme for Promotion of Culture of Science (SPoCS) is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Culture aimed at promoting scientific temper, awareness and informal science education, particularly among students. As of July 2025, 27 Science Centres had been established under the scheme.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS): Motor Neuron Disease & Occupational Pesticide Exposure

Why in News?

A recent global review found that occupational exposure to pesticides was associated with about a 60% higher risk of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The evidence strengthens concerns about occupational exposure among agricultural and other pesticide-handling workers, although an association does not by itself establish causation. 

What is ALS?

  • ALS, also called Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting motor neurons
  • Motor neurons control voluntary muscle movement
  • Their degeneration causes progressive muscle weakness, wasting and paralysis, eventually affecting speech, swallowing and breathing. 
  • Most ALS cases are sporadic, while a smaller proportion have identifiable genetic causes
  • There is currently no cure that reverses motor-neuron degeneration; treatment mainly aims to slow progression and manage symptoms. 

Pesticide Linkage

The review found elevated ALS risk among people with occupational pesticide exposure, particularly with herbicides and insecticides. The study also highlights the need for better exposure assessment in future research.

About Himalayan Serow

  • A medium-sized goat-antelope belonging to the genus Capricornis
  • A forest-dwelling ungulate, generally found on steep, rugged and rocky Himalayan slopes
  • Characterised by a dark coat, short horns and a secretive, largely solitary behaviour. 
  • Its elusive nature makes camera trapping and wildlife monitoring important for documenting populations. 
  • The Dalhousie record is associated with forests adjoining the Kalatop-Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary
