The Ramanathaswamy Temple at Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, featured prominently as the cultural backdrop while Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed BRICS leaders during the 2026 BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The temple’s depiction highlighted India’s architectural and civilisational heritage on an international platform. 

Key Facts

  • Location: Rameswaram, Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu, on Pamban Island
  • Deity: Lord Shiva; the temple houses one of the 12 Jyotirlingas
  • It is also one of the four major Char Dham pilgrimage sites—Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri and Rameswaram
  • The temple developed over several centuries, with major construction associated with the Sethupathy rulers from the medieval period. 
  • It is renowned for its massive corridors, carved pillars, gopurams and mandapams, characteristic of the Dravidian architectural tradition
  • The Third Corridor is approximately 197 m east–west and 133 m north–south, and is noted as one of the longest temple corridors in the world.

Why in News?

Fermat’s Last Theorem has returned to the spotlight after Anthropic’s AI system Claude reportedly produced a computer-checkable formalisation of its proof, converting Andrew Wiles’ celebrated proof into formal mathematical code. The AI reportedly completed the task in about 11 days, producing around 13 million lines of code

What is Fermat’s Last Theorem?

It states that the equation:

xⁿ + yⁿ = zⁿ

has no solution in positive integers x, y and z when n > 2.

  • Proposed by French mathematician Pierre de Fermat around 1637
  • Fermat famously claimed he had a “remarkable proof” but did not record it. 
  • The theorem remained unproved for more than 350 years

Andrew Wiles’ Breakthrough

  • British mathematician Andrew Wiles announced a proof in 1993
  • A gap was subsequently discovered in the proof. 
  • Wiles, with Richard Taylor, resolved the gap. 
  • The final proof was published in 1995
  • The proof established a crucial result concerning the modularity of semistable elliptic curves, which, together with earlier work by others, implied Fermat’s Last Theorem. 

Why is the 2026 Development Important?

Formalisation means translating a mathematical proof into a precise computer-readable language that a proof assistant can verify step-by-step. The recent AI work reportedly formalised the theorem in Lean, enabling machine verification. 

MCQ Trap: Fermat’s Last Theorem is not the statement that x2+y2=z2has no integer solutions. Pythagorean triples such as 3² + 4² = 5² exist; the restriction is n > 2.

Mayun Island: Strategic Island in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait

Mayun Island, also known as Perim Island, has become strategically important after Houthi forces reportedly captured the island in September 2026. Its location in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait gives it major significance for international shipping and energy security. 

About Mayun Island

  • Location: Southern entrance of the Red Sea, in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait
  • It is a volcanic island belonging to Yemen and administratively falls under Taiz Governorate
  • It is also called Perim Island; the Arabic name is Mayyun/Mayun
  • The island lies between Yemen and the Horn of Africa and divides the Bab-el-Mandeb into two navigable channels
  • Its strategic position allows monitoring of vessels entering or leaving the Red Sea. 

Why is it Strategically Important?

The Bab-el-Mandeb connects:
Red Sea → Gulf of Aden → Arabian Sea → Indian Ocean

It is therefore a crucial maritime route for ships travelling between Asia, Europe and the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal. Control or disruption around Mayun can potentially affect global shipping, oil supplies, freight costs and maritime security

The Houthi advance to Mayun followed the capture of Mocha (Mokha) on Yemen’s Red Sea coast, increasing their strategic leverage around the southern Red Sea. 

Important distinction: Mayun/Perim Island is Yemeni territory, while Djibouti and Eritrea lie on the African side of the Bab-el-Mandeb.

South Asia Wildlife Enforcement Network (SAWEN): Regional Action Against Wildlife Crime

The first General Assembly of the South Asia Wildlife Enforcement Network (SAWEN) was held in Kathmandu, Nepal, on 10–11 September 2026. Member countries adopted the Kathmandu Declaration, pledging stronger coordinated action against illegal wildlife trade and related transnational organised crime. 

About SAWEN

  • SAWEN = South Asia Wildlife Enforcement Network
  • It is an intergovernmental wildlife law-enforcement support body of South Asian countries. 
  • Members (8): Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. 
  • Launched: January 2011 at Paro, Bhutan
  • Secretariat: Kathmandu, Nepal. 
  • Its broad objective is to combat wildlife crime through cooperation, coordination, communication, collaboration and capacity building

Key Functions

  • Harmonisation and standardisation of wildlife-related laws and policies
  • Sharing of intelligence, information and research
  • Training, technical assistance and institutional capacity building. 
  • Supporting preparation and implementation of National Action Plans against wildlife crime.

The declaration seeks stronger action against wildlife trafficking through:

Installed data-centre power capacity grew from 375 MW (2020) to 1.57 GW (August 2026) and is projected to reach nearly 8 GW by 2030. Investments of nearly USD 70 billion are underway, with an additional USD 90 billion announced. The Government has strengthened the ecosystem through infrastructure status, tax holidays, and clean energy initiatives.
