Pangwala Tribe: Gut Microbiome Remains Stable Despite Migration

A recent study on the Pangwala tribal community of Himachal Pradesh found that people living in the remote Pangi Valley and those who migrated to urban areas retained a remarkably similar core gut microbiome, despite differences in lifestyle, diet and environment.
About Pangwala Tribe
- Pangwala are a Scheduled Tribe of Himachal Pradesh.
- They primarily inhabit the Pangi Valley of Chamba district, in the Pir Panjal Himalayas.
- Historically, difficult terrain and long winters contributed to relative geographical isolation and preservation of their distinct cultural and linguistic traditions.
Key Findings of the Study
- Researchers analysed 28 healthy volunteers using Whole Metagenome Shotgun Sequencing.
- The study examined bacteria, fungi, viruses, metabolic functions and antibiotic-resistance genes.
- Although the taxonomic composition of microbes varied between native and migrated groups, their functional profile remained considerably stable.
- This phenomenon is described as functional redundancy—different microorganisms can perform similar biological functions.
- Prevotella copri was a dominant bacterial species in both groups and was relatively more abundant among people living in Pangi.
- Bifidobacterium was also among the abundant genera and includes strains with probiotic/postbiotic potential.
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Link
The study detected resistance-associated genes against more than 100 antibiotics, including prominent resistance to vancomycin and teicoplanin. Importantly, the presence of resistance genes does not mean that the individuals had antibiotic-resistant infections.

The New Zealand Parliament passed legislation on 16 September 2026 to implement the India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The legislation was approved by 93–29 votes, clearing an important domestic step towards implementation.
India–New Zealand FTA: Key Facts
- The FTA was signed on 27 April 2026.
- New Zealand has committed to eliminate customs duties on 100% of its tariff lines, providing zero-duty access to Indian exports, subject to rules of origin.
- India has offered market access on 70.03% of tariff lines, while keeping 29.97% excluded; the covered lines account for about 95% of New Zealand’s bilateral trade.
- Indian sectors expected to benefit include textiles and apparel, leather and footwear, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and allied products, gems & jewellery and processed foods.
- The agreement also includes provisions concerning services and movement of professionals.

The National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) recently reviewed the implementation of the Dam Safety Act, 2021 and dam-safety preparedness in Jharkhand. The review focused on comprehensive safety evaluation and rehabilitation of Category-II dams and time-bound compliance with safety requirements.
What is NDSA?
- NDSA is a statutory authority established by the Central Government under the Dam Safety Act, 2021.
- Headquarters: New Delhi.
- It functions under the broader institutional framework created by the Act for surveillance, inspection, regulation and maintenance of specified dams.
- It is headed by a Chairman, assisted by five members overseeing wings relating to policy & research, technical matters, regulation, disaster & resilience, and administration & finance.
Major Functions
- Implement policies formulated by the National Committee on Dam Safety (NCDS).
- Resolve disputes between State Dam Safety Organisations (SDSOs) and, in specified circumstances, between an SDSO and dam owners.
- Specify regulations for dam inspection and investigation.
- Accredit agencies involved in construction, design and alteration of dams.
- Monitor compliance with prescribed dam-safety standards.
Dam Safety Act, 2021 — Key Link
The Act provides a uniform statutory framework for surveillance, inspection, operation and maintenance of specified dams. A specified dam generally means one over 15 m high, or 10–15 m high if it meets prescribed technical criteria.

Hilsa Fish: India–Bangladesh Fish Trade Reversal

The traditional flow of Hilsa (Ilish) trade between India and Bangladesh has reversed in 2026. India has reportedly exported around 500 tonnes of Hilsa to Bangladesh in the past two months, largely sourced from Gujarat, with shipments routed through Bharuch port. This comes amid lower Hilsa availability in Bangladesh.
About Hilsa
- Scientific name: Tenualosa ilisha
- Family: Clupeidae
- Also known as Ilish, Hilsa shad or Hilsa herring.
- It is an important anadromous fish—it migrates from the sea into freshwater rivers for breeding.
- Major Indian river systems associated with Hilsa include the Ganga–Hooghly, Narmada, Godavari and Mahanadi.
- In Bangladesh, the Padma–Meghna river system is particularly important.
- Hilsa is strongly associated with Bengali cuisine and culture and is the national fish of Bangladesh.
Ecological Significance
Hilsa requires connectivity between marine and freshwater ecosystems during its life cycle. River pollution, overfishing, habitat degradation and barriers to migration can affect its population and spawning.
India–Bangladesh Linkage
Historically, Bangladesh has been the world’s major Hilsa producer and has periodically exported Hilsa to India, particularly around Durga Puja. The 2026 reversal reflects changing production and trade conditions.

Nuakhai Festival: Odisha’s Harvest Festival

Nuakhai, the major harvest festival of western Odisha, was celebrated in September 2026. The festival is associated with the new harvest and is marked by offering newly harvested food grains to the presiding deity before people consume them. It is also associated with community bonding and gratitude towards farmers.
About Nuakhai
- Nuakhai literally refers to the consumption of newly harvested food.
- It is particularly prominent in western Odisha, especially the Sambalpur region.
- The festival traditionally follows the Nuakhai Lagna, an auspicious time fixed for offering the new crop to the deity.
- In Sambalpur, the festival is closely associated with Goddess Samaleswari, the presiding deity of the region.
- Newly harvested rice is an important part of the ritual.
- After the ceremonial offering, families share the new food and seek blessings from elders.
Cultural Significance
Nuakhai reflects the close relationship between agriculture, nature, religious traditions and community life. It marks the beginning of a new agricultural cycle and provides an occasion for families and communities to come together.
A distinctive social tradition associated with the festival is Nuakhai Bhetghat, when people meet, exchange greetings and strengthen social bonds.

Gucchi mushroom, a prized wild Himalayan morel, was featured in the BRICS 2026 gala dinner in New Delhi as Gucchi Marmik. It is known for its rarity, distinctive flavour and high market value, reportedly reaching around ₹40,000 per kg.
About Gucchi Mushroom
- Commonly known as Gucchi/Guchhi or Himalayan morel.
- Belongs to the genus Morchella, a group of edible sac fungi.
- Morchella esculenta is commonly associated with the true/common morel, although “Gucchi” can refer to several Morchella species.
- Characterised by a distinctive honeycomb-like, pitted cap.
- Found naturally in parts of the Himalayan region, including Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
- It is generally wild-harvested, as large-scale commercial cultivation remains difficult.
- Its short seasonal availability and difficulty of cultivation contribute to its high price.
Ecological & Economic Significance
Gucchi represents a valuable non-timber forest product (NTFP) and provides seasonal livelihood opportunities to mountain communities. Its collection also illustrates the economic importance of Himalayan forest biodiversity.

- It provides a common platform covering the pension lifecycle—from initiation and sanction to disbursement and grievance redressal.
- It aims to reduce dependence on intermediaries and improve transparency, accountability and efficiency.

- Direct pension payment: Pension is credited directly to the pensioner’s bank account.
- Digital pension records: Pensioners can access their pension-related information online.
- Grievance redressal: Provides a digital mechanism for raising and tracking pension grievances.
- Data integration: Brings together pension sanctioning, payment and accounting processes.
- Facilitates self-service: Pensioners can view pension details and track various transactions through the platform.
