Why in News?

Growing shrimp aquaculture has increased the demand for wild polychaete worms, which are commonly used as feed in aquaculture. Concerns are emerging over their large-scale harvesting and possible ecological impacts.

What are Polychaete Worms?

  • Polychaetes are a diverse group of marine annelids, commonly called bristle worms.
  • The term Polychaeta means “many bristles”, referring to their numerous chaetae.
  • They occur across almost all marine habitats—from estuaries, mangroves, sandy shores, coral reefs and seagrass beds to continental shelves and deeper waters.

Key Characteristics

  • Possess paired, fleshy, leg-like structures called parapodia used for crawling, swimming and burrowing.
  • Chaetae (bristles) are attached to the parapodia.
  • Most are marine, though some tolerate low-salinity environments.
  • Many are detritivores, contributing to decomposition and nutrient cycling.
  • Their sensitivity to environmental changes makes them useful bioindicators of ecosystem health.

Ecological & Economic Significance

Polychaetes contribute to sediment aeration, organic-matter breakdown and nutrient cycling. However, excessive harvesting for shrimp aquaculture may disturb benthic ecosystems.

KHAGANTAK-243: INDIGENOUS LONG-RANGE GLIDE BOMB

The Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted a drop trial of the indigenously designed and developed Khagantak-243 (K-243) Long Range Glide Bomb (LRGB), marking a step forward in India’s development of stand-off precision-strike capabilities.

About Khagantak-243

  • It is a 300-kg-class, airborne, long-range stand-off precision-guided glide bomb.
  • Developed jointly by: Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and JSR Dynamics.
  • It is released from a fighter aircraft and uses aerodynamic lift to glide towards its target rather than relying on a conventional free-fall trajectory.
  • Range: Around 144–180 km when released from approximately 12 km altitude at Mach 0.8, according to reported specifications.
  • It features swivel-type mid-body glide wings and five aft control surfaces for flight and target guidance.
  • Unlike conventional bombs, glide bombs enable aircraft to strike targets from stand-off distances, reducing the need to directly enter heavily defended airspace.

Significance

Khagantak-243 strengthens India’s indigenous precision-strike ecosystem, reduces dependence on imported air-launched munitions and enhances the survivability of combat aircraft through stand-off engagement.

SEPSIS: LIFE-THREATENING ORGAN DYSFUNCTION & AMR CHALLENGE

Why in News?

A global study has highlighted rising antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among children, threatening the effectiveness of antibiotics used to treat severe infections such as sepsis and pneumonia. The study analysed 106,581 bacterial isolates from 82 countries (2004–2022).

What is Sepsis?

  • Sepsis is a life-threatening condition in which the body’s extreme immune response to an infection causes organ dysfunction.
  • It can progress to septic shock, multiple organ failure and death.
  • Although commonly associated with bacterial infections, sepsis can also result from viral, fungal or parasitic infections.
  • Common sources include infections of the lungs, urinary tract, kidneys and abdomen.

AMR–Sepsis Link

  • AMR makes infections increasingly difficult to treat because microbes survive medicines that previously killed them.
  • In the study, resistance to Access antibiotics was highest at 36%, while resistance to Watch and Reserve antibiotics was 22% and 13%, respectively.
  • Among ICU patients, resistance to Watch antibiotics rose from 15% to 33%, while Reserve resistance increased from 9% to 32%.
  • Resistance was particularly high among children aged 0–2 years and those with sepsis.

COLD ALLODYNIA: BRAIN CIRCUIT BEHIND CHEMOTHERAPY-INDUCED COLD PAIN

Why in News?

Researchers from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and TCG-CREST, Kolkata, have identified a brain circuit involved in cold allodynia, a painful side effect associated particularly with the chemotherapy drug oxaliplatin. The study was published in Cell Reports.

What is Cold Allodynia?

  • It is a neuropathic pain condition in which normally non-painful cold stimuli are perceived as painful or distressing.
  • It is associated with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), which may cause temperature sensitivity, tingling and pain.
  • Oxaliplatin, a platinum-based chemotherapy drug, is a major trigger.
  • Other possible causes include diabetes, nerve injuries and infections.

Brain Circuit Identified

Researchers using mouse models found altered signalling between the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) in the brainstem and the parafascicular (PF) region of the thalamus. This LPBN–PF pathway contributes to both the sensory and affective-motivational responses to cold pain.

FULVOUS WHISTLING DUCK: RARE WETLAND VISITOR IN KERALA

Why in News?

A flock of more than 30 Fulvous Whistling Ducks was recently spotted at the Venjali wetlands in Malappuram, Kerala, where the species is rarely recorded.

About Fulvous Whistling Duck

  • Scientific name: Dendrocygna bicolor
  • Also known as the Fulvous Tree Duck, it is a large, goose-like waterbird with a long neck and legs.
  • It is widely distributed across tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, Africa and Asia.
  • In India, it is more commonly associated with Assam and other northeastern States.
  • Habitat: Shallow freshwater wetlands, marshes, swamps, flooded grasslands, slow-flowing streams and wet rice fields.
  • Appearance: Reddish-brown plumage, whitish flank stripes and a distinctive white crescent band across the black tail visible during flight.
  • It produces characteristic whistling calls, particularly while flying.
  • IUCN Red List: Least Concern (LC).

  • Established: 1971; it is the Pacific region’s principal political and economic organisation.
  • Members: 18, including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Palau, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu and Pacific territories.

Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) 5.0: Strengthening Business Resilience

Introduction

ECLGS 5.0, approved in May 2026, provides government-backed credit guarantees to MSMEs and other eligible businesses affected by external disruptions, enabling up to ₹2.55 lakh crore in additional credit. As of August 2026, 6.74 lakh guarantees had been issued, with MSMEs accounting for 97.3% by number.

 

Evolution of ECLGS

ECLGS 1.0 to 4.0 (2020-2023)

  • 1.0: MSMEs, business enterprises, Mudra borrowers, individual business loans (outstanding ≤₹50 crore; days past due ≤60 days as of 29 Feb 2020).
  • 2.0: Expanded to 26 stressed sectors (Kamath Committee) and healthcare (outstanding ₹50-500 crore; days past due ≤60 days as of 29 Feb 2020).
  • 3.0: Hospitality, travel & tourism, leisure & sporting, civil aviation (days past due ≤60 days as of 29 Feb 2020).
  • 4.0: Healthcare infrastructure—hospitals, medical colleges, oxygen manufacturers (days past due ≤90 days as of 31 March 2021).
  • Total (1.0 to 4.0): 1.19 crore guarantees; ₹3.68 lakh crore.

ECLGS 5.0: Key Features

  • Operational Period: Until 31 March 2027 (or ₹2.55 lakh crore guarantees issued, whichever earlier).
  • Eligible Borrowers: MSMEs (all sectors); eligible non-MSMEs (excluding NBFCs, power, telecom, sugar/ethanol, IT, paper, educational institutions, beverages/tobacco); scheduled passenger airlines.
  • Eligibility Condition: Existing working capital facilities as on 31 March 2026; repayments not overdue by >60 days.

 

Credit Guarantee and Terms

Guarantee Coverage

  • MSMEs: 100% guarantee
  • Non-MSMEs: 90% guarantee
  • Airlines: 90% guarantee
  • No Guarantee Fee: Payable by MLIs.

Additional Credit Support

  • MSMEs/Non-MSMEs: Up to 20% of peak fund-based working capital (Q4 FY 2025-26); ceiling ₹100 crore per borrower.
  • Airlines: Up to 100% (ceiling ₹1,500 crore); amounts >₹1,000 crore require proportionate equity contribution from promoters.

Interest Rates

  • MSMEs: EBLR + up to 0.75% (cap 9% per annum).
  • Non-MSMEs: MCLR + up to 0.75% (cap 9% per annum).
  • NBFCs: Cap 13% per annum.
  • Airlines: As per Board-approved policy.

Loan Tenure

  • MSMEs/Non-MSMEs: 5 years (including 1-year moratorium).

Introduction

A new United Nations special report warns that accelerating sea-level rise is becoming a profound human-rights crisis, threatening housing, water, food, health, education, and cultural identity. In 2024, the annual increase in global sea level reached a record 5.9 millimetres. Around 770 million people (10% of the global population) live less than five metres above the high-tide line. Without urgent adaptation measures, up to 1.2 billion people could be displaced by 2050. The report calls for urgent adaptation, finance, and rights-based climate action.
