Rotenone was recently in news after wildlife managers in Southcentral Alaska used the chemical to eradicate invasive Northern Pike from a lake and subsequently restocked it with native Arctic Char to restore the ecosystem.

What is Rotenone?

  • A naturally occurring plant-derived compound obtained from roots of tropical plants belonging mainly to the genera Derris, Lonchocarpus and Tephrosia.
  • Commonly used as an insecticide, pesticide and piscicide (fish poison).
  • Used in fisheries management to eliminate unwanted or invasive fish populations.

Mechanism of Action

  • Rotenone is readily absorbed through the gills of fish.
  • It interferes with cellular respiration, preventing effective utilisation of oxygen.
  • It breaks down relatively quickly under suitable environmental conditions, including exposure to sunlight and warmer water.

Ghepan Lake: A High-Altitude Himalayan Glacial Lake Under GLOF Watch

The Lahaul-Spiti district administration is strengthening monitoring of Ghepan Glacial Lake in Himachal Pradesh. An Early Warning System (EWS) is planned to monitor the lake continuously amid concerns over a possible Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). A five-member Geological Survey of India (GSI) team is also undertaking a detailed scientific assessment.

  • Also known as Ghepang Ghat Glacial Lake.

Researchers recently discovered and formally described Liocheles gracilipalpus, a new species of scorpion, from the Shivalik Hills in Reasi district, Jammu and Kashmir. The discovery highlights the relatively underexplored biodiversity of the Western Himalayas, particularly smaller invertebrate fauna.

About Liocheles gracilipalpus

  • Belongs to the family Hormuridae.
  • Discovered near Judda, Reasi district, at an elevation of about 1,655 metres.
  • “Gracilis” means slender, while “palpus” refers to the pedipalp, its distinctive pincer-like appendage.
  • Characterised by unusually long and slender pedipalps, particularly prominent in males.
  • Measures about 34.8–43.2 mm in length.
  • Shows marked sexual dimorphism.
  • Found beneath flat rocks and also in human-influenced habitats, including wood-storage sheds.
  • Species identification was supported by morphological and molecular evidence, including mitochondrial DNA analysis.

The seventh Status of Coral Reefs of the World report by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) highlighted that coral bleaching events are becoming increasingly frequent, leaving reefs insufficient time to recover. Major disturbances now occur every 4–6 years in many regions, compared with roughly once a decade earlier.

What is Coral Bleaching?

Coral bleaching occurs when environmental stress causes corals to expel their symbiotic, colour-giving microscopic algae called zooxanthellae (commonly associated with Symbiodinium).

Process:
Heat/Environmental stress → Zooxanthellae produce harmful reactive oxygen species → Coral expels algae → White calcium-carbonate skeleton becomes visible → Coral weakens and may die.

Bleached corals are not necessarily dead; they may recover if favourable conditions return quickly.

Major Causes

  • Rising sea-surface temperature and marine heatwaves;
  • Ocean acidification and pollution;
  • Sediment-laden runoff;
  • High solar irradiance;
  • Extreme low tides exposing shallow corals.

Key Findings

Global hard-coral cover has declined by about 9.5% compared with the 1980–2009 reference period. Marine heatwaves are now the strongest driver of global coral-cover decline.
