About Anak Krakatau

- It is an active Type-A volcano and lies within Indonesia’s highly volcanic Pacific Ring of Fire.

Scientists have described Thismia daemona, a new species of unusual flowering plant discovered in Thong Pha Phum National Park, western Thailand. It is popularly called the “devil flower” because of its dark, horn-like floral structure.
About Thismia daemona
- It belongs to the genus Thismia, commonly known as “fairy lanterns”.
- It is a leafless flowering plant that lacks chlorophyll and therefore cannot perform photosynthesis.
- Instead, it obtains nutrients through underground fungal associations, making it a mycoheterotrophic plant.
- The plant remains concealed beneath leaf litter for most of its life and becomes visible mainly when flowering.
- It was found at around 1,000 m elevation, an unusually high and seasonally dry habitat for the genus.
- Its dark flower has horn-like appendages and reddish-orange markings, giving it a distinctive appearance.
- Fewer than 50 individuals are currently known, leading to a provisional assessment of Critically Endangered.

The second edition of Exercise Veer Guardian 2026, a bilateral air exercise between the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF), is being conducted at Air Force Station Jodhpur, Rajasthan, from 9–22 September 2026.
About the Exercise
- First edition: 2023, held in Japan.
- Participants: IAF and JASDF.
- 2026 edition: Japan is deploying three Mitsubishi F-2A fighter aircraft from its 8th Air Wing at Tsuiki, along with about 110 personnel.
- It is the first time Japanese fighter aircraft are operating from an Indian air base for this bilateral exercise.
- Training focuses on air-combat manoeuvring, tactical proficiency, interoperability and operational synergy.
- The exercise provides both sides an opportunity to understand each other’s operational procedures, tactics and air-combat capabilities.
Significance
The deployment of Japan’s F-2A, a multirole fighter derived from the F-16 design, alongside Indian combat aircraft adds a dissimilar-air-combat training dimension. It also reflects the growing strategic and defence partnership between India and Japan in the Indo-Pacific.

- It participates in 100+ enzymatic reactions, particularly amino-acid/protein metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis, haemoglobin formation and immune function.
- Major dietary sources include fish, poultry, meat, potatoes, bananas, chickpeas and fortified cereals.
- Adult requirement is generally around 1.3–1.7 mg/day, depending on age and sex.
- Deficiency: may cause microcytic anaemia, dermatitis, glossitis, confusion and weakened immunity.
