Google has launched the AlphaGenome Atlas, an AI-powered digital resource designed to map and predict the molecular effects of genetic changes across the human genome. It aims to improve understanding of the largely unexplored non-coding regions of DNA.

- Developed by Google DeepMind, using its AlphaGenome AI model.
- Provides predictions for around 9 billion possible single-letter changes (single-nucleotide variants) in human DNA.
- Human genome contains about 3 billion base pairs.
- It examines both protein-coding and non-coding DNA.
- The non-coding portion, often described as about 98% of the genome, can contain regulatory elements that influence when and where genes are expressed.

A recent study from Udaipur, Rajasthan found antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the droppings of Red-naped Ibises, highlighting the possible role of wild birds in the environmental spread of antimicrobial resistance.
About Red-Naped Ibis
- Scientific name: Pseudibis papillosa
- Also known as Indian Black Ibis / Black Ibis.
- A bird of the Indian subcontinent, particularly associated with plains, agricultural landscapes and relatively dry habitats.
- Unlike many ibis species, it is not strictly dependent on wetlands and can occur in dry agricultural fields, grasslands, fallow fields, village areas and urban surroundings.
- Identification: Mostly dark/black body with a distinctive white shoulder patch and a bare head bearing a red, warty patch on the crown and nape.
Conservation Status
- IUCN Red List: Least Concern (LC)
- India: Listed under Schedule II of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Link
- Resistant bacteria detected in bird droppings indicate that wild birds can potentially act as vectors for dissemination of AMR through movement between agricultural, urban and natural environments.
- AMR occurs when microorganisms evolve resistance to medicines used to treat infections.
- It is a One Health issue involving interconnected human, animal and environmental health.

About Mocha Port
- Location: Western Yemen, on the Red Sea, near the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait.
- It is historically famous for the export of Mocha coffee, from which the term “mocha” became associated with coffee.
- The modern port was established in 1955.
- Mocha lies roughly 75–80 km from Bab-el-Mandeb, giving it considerable strategic significance.
- It was historically one of Yemen’s important commercial ports but its importance declined with the development of other regional ports.
Why is it Strategically Important?
- Bab-el-Mandeb connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the wider Indian Ocean.

UNESCO awarded its 2026 International Literacy Prizes during the global celebration of International Literacy Day held in Chiapas, Mexico, on 8–9 September 2026. Six initiatives from six countries were recognised.
About UNESCO International Literacy Prizes
- Instituted in 1967, the prizes recognise outstanding and innovative efforts to promote literacy worldwide.
- They comprise six annual awards under two categories:
- UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize – 3 awards: Supported by the Republic of Korea; focuses particularly on mother-tongue and multilingual literacy.
- UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy – 3 awards: Supported by China; promotes functional literacy, especially among rural adults and out-of-school youth, including through digital tools.
- Each 2026 laureate receives US$30,000, a medal and a diploma.

The United States constructed nearly 2,000 km of levees along the Mississippi River to protect communities and farmland from floods. However, these structures have also restricted the natural flow of sediment into Louisiana’s coastal wetlands, contributing to substantial land loss.
What are Levees?
- Levees are raised embankments or barriers constructed along rivers or coastlines to contain water and reduce flooding.
- They may be natural or artificial.
- Natural levees develop when sediment deposited during repeated river floods forms elevated banks along the channel.
- Artificial levees are engineered structures built to protect settlements, agricultural land and infrastructure.
Mississippi River–Louisiana Case
- The Mississippi River naturally carries sediment and nutrients into its delta and coastal wetlands.
- Extensive levee construction confined the river and reduced the periodic distribution of sediment across adjacent wetlands.
- Without adequate sediment replenishment, coastal land becomes vulnerable to subsidence, erosion and saltwater intrusion.

The Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN) has recently been in news for supporting the rollout of the Amended BharatNet Programme (ABP), including agreements with states to expand high-speed broadband connectivity in rural and underserved areas.
What is Digital Bharat Nidhi?
- DBN is the successor to the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF).
- The USOF was renamed Digital Bharat Nidhi in 2024 under the framework of the Telecommunications Act, 2023.
- It is administered under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications.
- Its core objective is to provide quality and affordable telecom and digital services in rural, remote and underserved areas where commercial telecom deployment may not be viable.
