Presence and Absence:
The only way to know the presence of something is to feel the absence of it. As long as something is there with you all the time, you will never know.
How often do you look at your finger and say, Wow, how beautiful you are! You don’t say that, but imagine if you lose it. Then you look at your hand and say, “Something is not right here. This finger should have been there.”
So when you lose it, that’s when you know you’re missing it. The problem with consciousness and aliveness is that we can never lose them. It’s ours. It’s within us. It’s always there.
The challenge is to realize it, and meditation is a process of getting through the noise, clutter, confusion, and chaos of the mind to the peace and serenity of the heart, to the peace and serenity of the Self, which is within us.
Once you get to your Self, how you interact with life changes completely. That is how meditation changes everything and nothing at the same time. It doesn’t address individual problems, it doesn’t alter individual things. Your life on the outside pretty much remains the same, but on the inside, you’re a completely different person.
