- It occurs due to refraction of light in ice crystals in the atmosphere.
- The Halo effect is only seen in sun, not in moon.
Which of the following statements is/are correct?
Correct
Q.2) Solution (a)
Sun’s halo, also known as 22 degree halo, is produced by the refraction of light in ice crystals in cirrus clouds, causing the halo to have colours. It takes the form of a ring with a radius of approximately 22 degrees around the sun.
The cloud contains millions of tiny ice crystals, which refract, split and even refract the light to give an impression of a circular rainbow ring.
The ice crystals have to be oriented and positioned just so with respect to your eye, in order for the halo to appear.
Similar halo can appear around the moon also, or around any source of light when such a refraction process takes place.
